The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2FHRW.pr-optout.com%2FTracking.aspx%3FData%3DHHL%253d8%252f8394-%253eLCE593719%2526SDG%253c90%253a.%26RE%3DMC%26RI%3D5637726%26Preview%3DFalse%26DistributionActionID%3D203398%26Action%3DFollow%2BLink&amp;data=02%7C01%7Chrwpress%40hrw.org%7Ca86fa2651560478b8fb508d77d41752a%7C2eb79de4d8044273a6e64b3188855f66%7C1%7C0%7C637115592406833522&amp;sdata=CX1yvwBbQPyy9CWNJ1yTR57MJyhY7dE%2FRYum802I8is%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">mission concluded<\/a>\u00a0in 2019 that \u201cthe State of Myanmar breached its obligation not to commit genocide under the Genocide Convention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case before the ICJ is not a criminal case against individual alleged perpetrators, but a legal determination of state responsibility for genocide. Gambia has asked the court for provisional measures to require Myanmar to immediately take all steps to prevent genocidal acts, including to stop and prevent further genocidal acts; to ensure that security forces do not commit or incite genocidal acts; and to preserve all evidence related to the military\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Gambia\u2019s filing was the first from a country without any direct connection to the alleged crimes that used the country\u2019s membership in the Genocide Convention to bring a case before the ICJ.
