{"id":35976,"date":"2023-05-30T14:40:22","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T14:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/?p=35976"},"modified":"2023-05-30T14:19:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T14:19:49","slug":"npp-reacts-to-bakau-spokesmans-endorsement-of-bensouda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/npp-reacts-to-bakau-spokesmans-endorsement-of-bensouda","title":{"rendered":"NPP reacts to Bakau spokesman\u2019s endorsement of Bensouda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>The governing National People\u2019s Party has said the actions of Alhaji Basiru Gassama in endorsing UDP\u2019s Talib Bensouda on election eve amounts to a political betrayal and constitutes a \u201cserious crime\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The outspoken Bakau politician surprisingly turned up at an opposition UDP final rally in Bakau Sanchaba to announce his endorsement of Talib Bensouda arguing that he was not interested in \u201cparochial politics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to Gassama\u2019s dramatic move, the NPP spokesman Lamin Queen Jammeh said Gassama\u2019s actions flouted \u201can important rule\u201d in Gambian politics. He added though that the NPP is yet to decide on any response or action over Gassama\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I will express my concern that his actions is serious and the party will not take it lightly. We have to assess the extent of damage his actions may have caused to the party. Certain people of high standing in society can influence a lot of people at the eleventh hour through the kind of action done by Gassama. But another important factor is understanding the NPP as a political institution, and understanding that this man does not represent any authority in NPP there.
