Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has called on President Adama Barrow\u2019s government to provide urgent assistance to the victims of recent floods in the Upper River Region.<\/b><\/p>\n

In a statement on Sunday, GDC said that the floods have caused widespread damage to homes, crops, and livestock leaving many people displaced and in need of food, water, and shelter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to register my heartfelt sympathy to the affected families in Basse and call on the Government to come to their rescue as affected families are living in a very bad state.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, I call on councils and President Barrow to come out now and do the needful. We cannot be seated until our people are hit again to come out of our comfort zone when we could have done something over the years to prevent our people from the same struggle year-round. It is time now to act in the best interest of the people,\u201d GDC said.<\/p>\n

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) under the leadership of Hon. Mamma Kandeh expresses its deepest sympathy to the victims of the recent floods in the country. The GDC is deeply saddened to learn that many households have been displaced and have suffered huge losses of property.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have learned that the torrential rain has destroyed people\u2019s properties and forced them to live in a more bad condition. Last year we witnessed a serious flood which we could have avoided with the right plans to reduce the expected damages of this year\u2019s rain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Upper River Region has just recorded its first rain and we have seen the struggle our people are confronted with. This should serve as a wake-up call to both the Local Government Councils and Central government to jointly work together to avert future damages. It was forecasted that The Gambia will record its first rain in the early month of June and this should have been guided with actions from both the Central and Local Government to minimize the damage caused,\u201d they concluded.<\/p>\n
