Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Children and Social Welfare has spoken of government’s plan to establish a special court to try cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

Fatou Kinteh was speaking on Tuesday at a United Nations joint presser on Gender Management Information System (GMIS) at a ceremony held at GMIS Centre in Bakoteh.<\/p>\n

She said the government was also on course to establishing a foresenic lab as \u201cmost of the GBV cases are either referred to Senegal or Ghana\u201d for examination.<\/p>\n

The Gender Minister revealed that GMIS Centre, which started operations in January 2013, was designed to facilitate the delivery of quality services in line with the global standards GBV guiding principles.<\/p>\n

“It also seeks to strengthen referrals in a timely and most appropriate manner,” she said.<\/p>\n

To this end, she thanked the UN System and all stakeholders for their continued support.<\/p>\n

Further commenting on the planned Special Courts, Minister Kinteh indicated: \u201cThis will be like the Children’s Court where cases of Gender-based Violence will be heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will ensure that victims of Gender-based Violence are not frustrated in seeking justice as well as deterring perpetrators of the awful menace.\u201d<\/p>\n

She called on all to report GBV cases as their particulars would be kept confidential.<\/p>\n

“We will continue to educate women with disabilities on GBV risks and how to identify and report violations,” she stated, adding that adolescents are the most affected by gender-based violence, thus expressed the resolve to partner with the Children’s Parliament of The Gambia.<\/p>\n

She further emphasised the importance of partnership and collaboration in yeidling more results.<\/p>\n

She highlighted the GBV policy presented at the cabinet level, saying that one of the areas in the policy is protecting women with disabilities against GBV.<\/p>\n
