Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Indiscriminate dumping of waste is posing health hazard at the Tanji Fish Landing Site \u2013 the country\u2019s biggest landing site, according to vendors.<\/b><\/p>\n

This is mainly caused by some vendors and other users of the site.<\/p>\n

A lot of women spend the entire day at the fish landing site to earn a living for their families.<\/p>\n

Yusupha Jatta, a vendor at the site for over 18 years, expressed dismay over the poor waste management and disposal of organic materials. He said this affects them daily.<\/p>\n

He explained that in the past there used to be proper waste management, but authorities have now turned their backs in \u201cmaintaining a healthy environment\u201d at the Tanji Fishing Landing Site.<\/p>\n

He added that the odour emanating from the stagnant water around the Ice Plant is so bad that it could pose health hazards to those who use the place daily.<\/p>\n

Tijan Jallow, a shop keeper at the Landing Site, says he sometimes takes the responsibility upon himself to clean some areas where women and fish vendors sit and sell.<\/p>\n

However, he said, his challenge is where to dispose the waste after cleaning.<\/p>\n

Jallow further revealed that the recent atmosphere at the fish landing site is not favourable as the bad odour from rotten fish is unhealthy to inhale.<\/p>\n

He called on the government and Brikama Area Council to help them remedy the condition.<\/p>\n

Jainaba Manneh, also a fish vendor, beamoned the negative effects of the disposal of waste at the site.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the saying goes health is wealth. The more we live in such bad environment, the more it can cause us sickness. We need help from the government and other responsible authorities to remedy the situation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf responsible authorities cannot provide us healthy waste management, we will take it as a duty upon ourselves to maintain a healthy environment. All what we are asking of them is to provide us with the tools needed to clean the site.\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

Our efforts to reach the Tanji fishing centre management for comments proved futile as the chairman was away and his assistant refused to make any comments.<\/p>\n
