Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Assistant country rep. at UNFPA has lamented that despite the ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) its prevalence still stagnates around 73%, even though there are regional disparities as in some regions, it is as high as 90%.<\/b><\/p>\n

Lamin Camara made this disclosure on Wednesday while giving an insight into the 9th Country Programme Document (CPD), an ambitious document which explores various areas, accelerators, scope as well as the results at Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre.<\/p>\n

Camara acknowledged that with the 2015 ban on FGM, there still exists some resistance in some quarters against this ban.<\/p>\n

He thus called for more strategies and innovative approach to address old challenges that people have been dealing with over the years, reminding that one of the key accelerators of this CPD is to leave no one behind.<\/p>\n

He also talked about their various initiatives, citing that they earlier signed a compact agreement with government to contribute to procurement of family planning commodities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs practitioners, if we really want to deliver for The Gambia and ensure that we are able to fulfil the potentials of young people and women and girls, we need to be able to boldly address some of these challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

He equally highlighted the need for more community conversations and initiatives surrounding FGM and other negative vices affecting the wellbeing of women and young girls.<\/p>\n

This, he added, would really ensure community\u2019s understanding of some of these challenges.<\/p>\n

The Gambia, he added, faces numerous challenges which include poverty, something he said, has forced many youngsters to take the deadly migration route to seek for better life in the West.<\/p>\n

He also talked about the gains made in ending preventable maternal deaths and improving the unmet need for family planning.<\/p>\n
