Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>During a joint meeting with the constituents of Kombo East, Brikama North, and Brikama South, the President of the Republic of The Gambia emphasized that markets are under the jurisdiction of the central government, not the area councils.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe ownership of markets lies with the central government; councils do not possess any markets. We entrust councils with the responsibility of managing market affairs. No one gives birth to a child and harbors animosity towards it. What I\u2019m conveying to Gambians is that we were lenient in the past five years, but now that period has elapsed. Adhering to the law is imperative; failure to comply will result in consequences,\u201d stated the president.<\/p>\n

President Barrow also urged the Brikama Area Council to prioritize cleaning the area before claiming to assist the women.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am advising the council to roll up their sleeves and clean the area first. It\u2019s the easiest task for a council. Regardless of how inefficient a council may be, they can accomplish that. However, even the council\u2019s entrance is very dirty. You claim to assist women, but you can\u2019t even maintain cleanliness. Look at the Brikama Market, where we erected 88 stores and a multi-story building\u2014a first in Brikama\u2019s history,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

Additionally, President Barrow stressed the interdependence of the Brikama Area Council and the central government, emphasizing that the council\u2019s existence relies on the central government.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m telling you that the council won\u2019t exist without the central government. The two entities work hand in hand. The council, with all its resources, is smaller than the central government. Advise the council to exercise patience. The council cannot construct roads, markets, or provide electricity. These initiatives are facilitated by the central government. If you refuse to collaborate with the government, what will you offer your people?\u201d questioned the president.<\/p>\n

President Barrow concluded by calling on all Gambians to unite for national development, emphasizing the need for individuals in various roles to set aside differences and work collectively for the country\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy message is clear: whether you are working with the Area Council, at the Governor\u2019s office, or with the government, we all need to unite, prioritize the people\u2019s interests, and work towards advancing the country. Personal conflicts from the campaign period should be set aside for the greater good. Continuously engaging in past battles won\u2019t fulfill the people\u2019s expectations during your tenure,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
