Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>In an effort to empower women and youths in skills development, the Association of Women of West Africa (AFAO) in collaboration with West African Women Association (WAWA) on Monday commenced a week-long training for 20 Gambians on milk processing techniques, gender and leadership, and simplified management.<\/b><\/p>\n

The training which brought together participants from across the country is underway at a training center in Jeshwang.<\/p>\n

The project was initiated by the Association of West African Women (AFAO) in close collaboration with ECOWAS\/ARAA who are currently benefitting from the invaluable support of the Swiss Cooperation through PRAOP 3.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview with journalists shortly after the opening of the training, Mam Sainabou Njie, president of West African Women Association (WAWA) said the training aims to equip participants with high-level technical and commercial skills with the goal of enhancing the employability and empowerment of women and youths both in The Gambia and Senegal.<\/p>\n

She added that the project is in three phases; the first phase trained ten women in Dakar, Senegal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe project targets women and youths from Banjul to Basse,\u201d she added, noting that the third phase will also select another 20 participants.<\/p>\n

Emmanuel W. Mendy, deputy director general, Animal Production at the Ministry of Agriculture, said the project is operating both in The Gambia and Senegal.<\/p>\n

He added that ten Gambians and ten Senegalese benefitted from the first phase.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you train a woman, you are training a family, so we want to build the capacity of these women in terms of milk processing so that their self life can be improved,\u201d he stated. He added that the training will also improve food security.<\/p>\n
