Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>In a significant political move, prominent figures within the National People\u2019s Party (NPP) have crossed party lines to join the United Democratic Party (UDP). Buwa Fofana, Chairman of the NPP Busumbala Constituency, Manyima Darbo, NPP women leader in Farato, Sally Jatta, NPP Campaign Manager in Dobong Kunda, Tida Suwaneh, NPP Youth Leader, and Muktar Konta, a strong supporter in Lamin Kerewan, announced their defection to the opposition party on Sunday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The ceremony marking their defection, held at the United Democratic Party Manjai bureau, saw the presence of key UDP figures including the party leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, Deputy Party Leader Aji Yam Secka, and National President Aji Yamundow Yabo, alongside UDP National Assembly members and other dignitaries.<\/p>\n

The defectors cited the UDP\u2019s potential to alleviate the hardships faced by Gambians as their reason for joining the party.<\/p>\n

Buwa Fofana, speaking on behalf of the defectors, expressed his historical ties to the UDP, highlighting his role in supporting President Barrow\u2019s ascent to power. He affirmed his commitment to working for the UDP\u2019s success, expressing optimism about the party\u2019s prospects in the 2026 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have returned to my home because I am among the founders of the United Democratic Party. I am the founder of the Chairman Association in the West Coast Region and President Barrow knows what I did for him. If it was not for that Association, it would have been difficult for Adama to Succeed there. I am back home and I will work for the party and God willing, UDP will be at State House in 2026,\u201d Buwa Fofana said.<\/p>\n

The other defectors echoed Fofana\u2019s sentiments, pledging their dedication to ensuring the UDP\u2019s victory in the upcoming 2026 presidential election.<\/p>\n
