Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Responding to the upcoming vote in Gambia\u2019s parliament Monday on a bill to reverse the ban on female genital mutilation (FGM), Miche\u0300le Eken, senior researcher at Amnesty International\u2019s West and Central Africa office, said:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill would set a dangerous precedent for women\u2019s rights and tarnish Gambia\u2019s human rights record. We urge parliament to vote against it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very disappointing that after the long fight Gambian activists put up to advance women\u2019s rights, parliament is preparing to consider this backward move.<\/p>\n

The Gambian government needs to address the root causes and drivers of FGM and implement comprehensive policies for women and girls\u2019 empowerment<\/b><\/p>\n

Miche\u0300le Eken, senior researcher at Amnesty International\u2019s West and Central Africa office<\/p>\n

\u201cFemale genital mutilation infringes on girls and women\u2019s right to health and bodily integrity. Legalizing it would be a violation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, all of which Gambia ratified. It would also violate the principle of \u2018equal dignity of the person\u2019 guaranteed in the Gambian Constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, the Gambian government needs to address the root causes and drivers of FGM and implement comprehensive policies for women and girls\u2019 empowerment to claim and exercise their human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
