Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Hon. Rohey John Manjang has informed lawmakers that the President has directed her Ministry to work on instituting a sustainable national waste management system.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe president has directed that the ministry should work on instituting a sustainable national waste management system, currently the Ministry has already started engaging a Senegalese waste management institution set up by their government for a similar purpose to design and implement a solution before the end of 2024,\u201d she disclosed.<\/p>\n

She added that through the National Environment Agency (NEA) their main responsibility is to regulate matters relating to waste collection, disposal, and management.<\/p>\n

She also expressed that The National Environment Management Act will consider a more robust way of handling and prosecuting matters of this nature, saying \u201cBefore it was not centralized to the agency but now we want to centralize it so that we will make these very implementable and useful\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the new bill which is almost at the implementation stage, NEA has already recruited their legal expert who has currently started work and has been given the powers by the Justice Minister to execute only cases of environment issues. This will help in addressing Anti-littering and other environmental problems,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

This was disclosed during the question and answer session between National Assembly Members (NAMs) and Ministers on Thursday 21st March at the National Assembly in Banjul.<\/p>\n
