Anybody who\u2019s a member of the IEC, then automatically the person is a referee. If you are a referee, you must be independent. If you are independent then it makes the job easy for you. If you are independent, it makes it very easy for all the parties to accept the final results, the final decision of the Gambian people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

President Barrow was speaking to journalists yesterday at the Election House shortly after submitting his nomination papers to the IEC officials along the Bertil Harding Highway. The President was accompanied to the Election House by his two wives, the vice president, cabinet ministers, and executive members of different political parties which form an alliance with the NPP and thousands of party supporters.<\/p>\n

Responding to questions from journalists, Barrow said his administration is committed to national development, adding: \u201cI have a slogan that if there is no infrastructure then there\u2019s no development, thus I will continue on my infrastructural development from where I stopped in my last five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Barrow also used the opportunity to express condolences to the bereaved families of five party supporters who died in a road accident while coming to attend the nomination on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he would publicly declare his assets, President Barrow said: \u201cAssets declaration is part of the condition of the IEC, thus I have already declared my assets to the officials of the IEC when I submitted my credentials. In fact, it is part of the rules and regulations of the country\u2019s Independent Electoral Commission.<\/p>\n

Quizzed about his alliance with the APRC, he said: \u201cAPRC is a party and we are in alliance with them based on principles. APRC is a registered party and they are legally operating in this country and we are also a party that\u2019s why we form an alliance with them. Our alliance with them is in the interest of the country and in the best interest of national security and in the best interest of national reconciliation,\u201d he posited.<\/p>\n

On the outcome of the December 4th Presidential election, the Gambian leader further added: \u201cWhatever Gambian people decide, I will respect it because I am a democrat and I believe in the principles of democracy and rule of law. It\u2019s the Gambian people who make the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked again whether he will implement the full recommendations of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC), he said: \u201cVery soon I will receive the report of the Commission. However, as far as I am concerned, I didn\u2019t yet receive the report of the Commission. When we receive the report, my government will sit and discuss it. It\u2019s not going to be my personal decision; it\u2019s going to be the decision of my government,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Essa Mbaye Faal, former Lead Counsel to the TRRC, accompanied by his wife with hundreds of his supporters also on Thursday submitted the necessary documents to the IEC officials.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists shortly after, Essa Mbaye Faal said: \u201cGambian people especially the young people are all yearning for change. Gambians are expressing their dissatisfaction about the current status quo, thus that\u2019s why I am standing here before you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Faal accused the NPP of sabotaging his nomination on Thursday, claiming: \u201cThe NPP hijacked most of the vehicles that I already rented to transport my supporters to the electoral house. The NPP decided to double-price the amount of money that we already had agreement with the drivers. I am really disappointed and obviously this is done by the NPP.\u201d<\/p>\n
