Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The suburb has ‘got some trouble but that\u2019s usual’ say residents who love the area known for high-rise flats and a handy town commuteA suburb in Leeds was once so well known for its fashionable housing and interesting architecture, it was nicknamed Little London.<\/p>\n

The nickname came about in the 19th century and has stuck even though the Woodhouse area has changed considerably. The areas was redeveloped in the 1950s and 60s after becoming dilapidated, and various high-rise and low-rise council housing was developed throughout the suburb.<\/p>\n

For the latest coverage about people’s lives, click here It now consists of four estates, Lovell Park, Oatlands, Carlton and the Servias. Twenty years ago, the area grew a bad reputation for drug-dealing and anti-social behaviour, there were 66 ASBOs (anti-social behaviour orders) issued there in 2003.<\/p>\n

Today, residents say the area has improved \u2013 and go as far as saying it\u2019s even better than actual London. \u201cI went to London once and it wasn\u2019t much cop,\u201d said Ian Charles, 62, who has lived in Little London for 20 years.\u201cIt wasn\u2019t much good. It\u2019s too expensive. For me, this area is better. The shop\u2019s there and town is nearby. It\u2019s got some trouble but that\u2019s usual.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s admitted that there was more trouble there a \u201cfew years ago\u201d but it has since improved. He believes the fact that the area is now far more diverse is the reason why crime has reduced.’<\/p>\n
