Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>On December 4th, Gambians went to the polls to elect a leader who will steer the affairs of the country in the next five years. The incumbent, President Barrow was re-elected.<\/p>\n

Although, his major challengers including the A.N.M. Ousainu Darboe, the former presidential candidate for the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and Mama Kandeh, former presidential candidate for the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) have rejected the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC\u2019s) elections results.<\/p>\n

However, in a statement, Rohey Malick Lowe, mayoress of Banjul City Council (BCC) congratulated President Adama Barrow for his victory in the just concluded Presidential elections.<\/p>\n

Mayoress Lowe, an executive member of the UDP said: \u201cA key element in the exercise of democracy is the holding of free and fair elections so people can freely express their will in a competitive democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis election was held on the basis of universal, equal and secret suffrage where all voters had the opportunity to choose their President in conditions of equality, openness and transparency. The people of Banjul in particular and Gambians in general, have spoken. Banjul City Council (BCC) therefore takes this opportunity to thank all Gambians for coming out in large numbers and peacefully casting their votes.\u201d<\/p>\n

She prayed that Almighty God provide President Barrow the wisdom to unify Gambians and fortify himself to build a better Gambia that will promote peace, prosperity and welfare for all especially the women and youths.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also use this opportunity to thank and commend all the contesting candidates for their sacrifices and for providing an alternative to the Gambian people and wish them the best in all their future endeavours,\u201d she further said.<\/p>\n

For his part, Haruna Barra, acting chairperson of the Janjanbureh Area Council, who secured his seat under the opposition GDC ticket, said in a statement that: \u201c The leadership of Janjanbureh Area Council has congratulate you (President elect Barrow) on your December 4 elections.<\/p>\n

Barry said, he knew that President Barrow would work hard on executing his functions to deliver services of the Gambian people who entrusted him the country in the next five.<\/p>\n
