Modou Lamin Jatta, vice-chairperson of the road safety foundation in The Gambia has disclosed that road accidents are the number one killer of young people in the world. Mr Jatta, made these remarks recently in an interview with The standard centering on the state of road safety in The Gambia.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobally, over a 1.3million people die in road accidents yearly while 50million others get injured, with many of these injuries resulting in lifelong disabilities,\u201d he said. He said these harrowing numbers include Gambian deaths.<\/p>\n

According to him most road accident victims in The Gambia are the cream of the society and able-bodied men and women who the country heavily relies on. Jatta said the fundamental lesson from all these, is for all road users to be extra cautious and adhere to road safety regulations.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery road user is vulnerable and no one can tell who the next victim will be. But the good news is that car crashes are highly preventable if the right attitude, measures, and legislations are put in place\u201d, he said. He, therefore, urged all to develop good road habits in order to save lives.<\/p>\n
