{"id":73723,"date":"2025-02-12T17:20:21","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T17:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/uncategorized\/musk-led-group-in-surprise-bid-for-chatgpt-maker-openai"},"modified":"2025-03-08T19:55:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-08T19:55:58","slug":"musk-led-group-in-surprise-bid-for-chatgpt-maker-openai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/musk-led-group-in-surprise-bid-for-chatgpt-maker-openai","title":{"rendered":"Musk-Led Group in Surprise Bid for Chatgpt Maker Openai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>A consortium of investors led by Elon Musk offered $97.4bn to take over OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The billionaire\u2019s attorney, Marc Toberoff, confirmed he submitted the bid for \u201call assets\u201d of the tech company to its board on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The offer is the latest twist in a longstanding battle between Musk, the world\u2019s richest man and right hand to US President Donald Trump, and Open AI chief executive Sam Altman over the future of the start-up at the centre of the AI boom.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the bid, Altman posted on Musk\u2019s social media platform X: \u201cno thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI is widely credited with helping bring artificial intelligence tools into the mainstream and sparking huge investment in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Musk and Altman co-founded the start-up in 2015 as a non-profit company, but the relationship has soured since the Tesla and X boss departed the firm in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Altman is said to be restructuring the company to become a for-profit entity, stripping it of its non-profit board \u2013 a move Musk argues means the company has abandoned its founding mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>But OpenAI argues its transition into a for-profit firm is required to secure the money needed for developing the best artificial intelligence models.<\/p>\n<p>The bid to take over OpenAI is being backed by Musk\u2019s AI company xAI, as well as several private equity firms, including Baron Capital Group and Valor Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was.
