Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Mamma Kandeh, leader of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has said he would accept a position in President Adama Barrow\u2019s government if it is driven by national interest.<\/b><\/p>\n

In a recent interview aired on Thursday, Kandeh stressed that his willingness to cooperate was not driven by personal gain but by a commitment to national service.<\/p>\n

Kandeh said: \u201cIf President Barrow offers me a position where I can genuinely serve the interest of the nation, I would have no reason to reject it, but if the offer is based on personal interest or political reward, then I have no need for it. I didn\u2019t form a party or enter politics for money or self-enrichment. My goal has always been to serve Gambians.\u201d<\/p>\n

The GDC leader\u2019s remarks come amid ongoing speculations on social media and radios about a possible alliance between his party and the ruling National People\u2019s Party (NPP). Some have claimed that Kandeh is being considered for key cabinet positions, including that of Vice President or Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kandeh, however, firmly dismissed such claims, stating that no formal offer has been made and no discussion has taken place with the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are saying Mamma Kandeh will be offered the Vice Presidency or Foreign Affairs portfolio. But President Barrow has not told me that, and I have never asked him for anything,\u201d he clarified. \u201cI heard the rumors just like everyone else. Is it wrong to hold dialogue or engage in political discussions with the president? Was it wrong when others joined him in a coalition that made him president?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kandeh went on to criticize the narrative suggesting that any dialogue between opposition leaders and the president is suspicious or politically motivated. He pointed out the inconsistency in public reactions, arguing that it was not seen as controversial when others joined Barrow to form a coalition government in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuddenly, when Mamma Kandeh speaks with Barrow, it becomes a crime. That\u2019s unfair,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if President Barrow calls me tomorrow, I will answer that call. Dialogue should never be demonized.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also addressed speculation about a secret agreement between GDC and NPP, describing the claims as illogical. \u201cIf there is an agreement, why would we hide it? It makes no sense to say there\u2019s an alliance but not reveal the terms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kandeh concluded by reaffirming his commitment to national service, noting that he has consistently contributed to the country in various ways without seeking recognition or reward. \u201cI have done many things in service to the nation, not because I was obliged to, but because I care,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n
