Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Yankuba Darboe, the chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), has sharply criticised the government handling of what he described as crucial income generating sources of the country, saying President Barrow does not prioritise a progressive Gambia.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at a UDP rally in Sukuta on Monday, the BAC Chairman said the government is mismanaging the tourism and agriculture sectors and also ceding reliable sources of national revenue. He calls on Gambians to put aside their differences and give the mantle of governance to the right people to rescue the country.<\/p>\n

He attributes that tourism is a very important incoming generating sector, which is why the government of Sir Dawda Jawara reserved most of the coastline for tourism development, highlighting that The Gambia is the only country in the sub-region that has such a massive area to boost its income through tourism.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir Dawda has laid a foundation for tourism development since 1970. Now, when tourists come, we charge them to pay an extra D1000 after paying it on their tickets. Many of them boycott their visit to The Gambia. Scandinavian airlines also declined to come. Tourism that we can rely on for foreign currency and develop our economy, we chose to destroy this source of revenue. Are we ready to develop this country? We are not,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

Darboe also faults the government\u2019s mechanisms for agricultural development, saying that the government neglected priorities of the farming community. He says farmers can no longer afford to buy seeds and fertilisers, and they can\u2019t afford to hire tractors.<\/p>\n

He alleged that the government has ceded both the Gambia Ports Authority and GAMTEL to private investors, stating such actions suppress the country\u2019s revenue generation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ports that is generating majority of the revenue for the country is given to the Turkish. The GAMTEL that is generating a lot of revenue is also given out to others. The Senegambia Bridge is also given to private investors. I am telling you that Adama Barrow does not love you. There is no one who hates us more than Adama Barrow,\u201d he charged.<\/p>\n

He said the opportunity to rescue the country is eminently approaching in 2026, advising Gambians to vote for the United Democratic Party for the realisation of unprecedented development, rule of law, and good governance.<\/p>\n
