Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Karamo Njie, senior UDP official has reacted sharply to lawyer Assan Martin\u2019s comments on \u201colder political guards to rest their leadership ambitions.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Mr. Njie, the United Democratic Party (UDP)\u2019s North Bank spokesman, dismisses Martin\u2019s suggestions saying he \u201cis not in any position to decide UDP\u2019s candidature.\u201d It could be recalled that Mr. Martin in an interview, published on Monday, called on UDP\u2019s Ousainou Darboe and Halifa Sallah of PDOIS to be pillars of change. He thanked the two leaders for their significant contributions in Gambia\u2019s political development. But he also urged them to give up their presidential ambitions and give chance to the younger generation of politicians ahead of 2026 presidential elections.<\/p>\n

So, to react to Martin\u2019s comments, Njie gave an interview on Tuesday dismissing them completely. Njie describes Martin\u2019s remarks as unjustifiable in relation to the realities within the UDP, adding that his party militants are more open-minded and more educated than Assan Martin therefore, he can\u2019t tell them what to do in selecting a candidate for presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United Democratic Party is a party for all Gambians, but Martin has never had any input into making the party a better one. Why now? Ousainou Darboe had done a lot to keep the militants of this party united. If Ousainou points any young leader for us to follow, we will surely do that,\u201d he remarked. \u201cLawyer Martin and his kind are trying to divide our party, but this party can never be divided, especially about leadership struggles,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The UDP North Bank PRO also dismissed the claim that Barrow had won the 2021 presidential election, arguing that it was \u201cstolen,\u201d and his party was robbed of its victory. He maintains that now UDP stands on a greater chance of defeating President Barrow in 2026 election.<\/p>\n

He claims that President Barrow is an incompetent leader and must not be given another opportunity to lead the country beyond 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agreed with Martin that Barrow is running the country in a very undesirable direction. Every Gambian is desperate of his governance system. It impoverished citizens, increased hardship, and limits buying powers of average Gambians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Njie finally urged all Gambians to ignore the utterances of Assan Martin and focus on the greater good of the country.<\/p>\n
