Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Haji Suwaneh, National Youth President of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has alleged that the National People\u2019s Party (NPP) cannot secure victory in a fair election without resorting to manipulation. He claimed one of the controversial tactics being used by the NPP is what he described as a \u201cdubious\u201d overseas ID card issuance scheme.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI know that one of the controversial strategies being deployed is the dubious Overseas ID Card issuance scheme. Because it is very clear that the NPP cannot win fair elections without manipulation. I see this as part of an unreported survey, a cloak for sinister plans including voter manipulation and election rigging. Coupled with attempts to instill tribal fears within the political environment to divert people away from the realities of our country to the debate of which tribe loves or hates the other. This undermines our nation\u2019s unity and democratic principles,\u201d Suwaneh said.<\/p>\n

According to Suwaneh, Gambians are aware of these alleged strategies and are prepared to challenge them. He urged the public to resist any actions that compromises the nation\u2019s democratic values and to safeguard a fair, transparent, and credible electoral process.<\/p>\n

The UDP youth leader also said the country is at a \u201ccritical crossroads,\u201d citing surveys that indicate that 77% of Gambians believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction under President Barrow\u2019s leadership. He added that economic hardship has driven 68% of the population to consider emigrating for better opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cEconomic hardship is compelling 68% of the population to consider emigrating to seek better opportunities elsewhere. During just two months, from May to June, more than 2,000 Gambians have left our shores in pursuit of a better future. Amidst this dire context, the NPP\u2019s claim of potential victory, let alone with a 75% margin, feels baffling and out of touch with reality,\u201d Haji Suwaneh said.<\/p>\n

Suwaneh called on the international community, election observers, and Gambians at large to remain vigilant.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to increase scrutiny on the NPP and its electoral practices, ensuring fairness and transparency. Elections should reflect the true will of the people, free from manipulation,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
