{"id":85014,"date":"2025-08-29T07:37:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T07:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/uncategorized\/information-minister-defends-gambia-economy-amid-debt-concerns"},"modified":"2025-08-29T07:53:22","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T07:53:22","slug":"information-minister-defends-gambia-economy-amid-debt-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/information-minister-defends-gambia-economy-amid-debt-concerns","title":{"rendered":"Information Minister Defends Gambia Economy Amid Debt Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>The Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has defended the government\u2019s economic management following concerns raised in a recent World Bank report regarding the country\u2019s debt levels.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with West Coast Radio, Dr. Ceesay emphasized that some interpretations of the report have been misinterpreted , noting that the World Bank\u2019s overall assessment was largely positive. \u201cWell, I think people read that particular report out of context; in fact, the World Bank has really praised the Gambia in that particular report for sound and judicious but also public finance management,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister highlighted that the report reflects robust economic growth and improved debt management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, it says that our economy is projected to grow to 5.7 to 5.9 percent per year. Inflation has gone down, and also our debt-to-GDP ratio has gone down from 73 percent, I think a couple of years ago, to now 60-something percent,\u201d Dr. Ceesay stated.<\/p>\n<p>He further reassured that the country\u2019s borrowing remains manageable and debt levels are sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we are doing well on that front; we are not taking on new, more unsustainable debts, our debts are sustainable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ceesay emphasized that The Gambia\u2019s economic outlook remains positive, noting that the World Bank does not consider the situation alarming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Gambia\u2019s economy is on track, as confirmed by the World Bank,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, obviously, if 20-something percent of your budget goes to servicing debt, there is some concern because that money could have been used for something else.
