{"id":86061,"date":"2025-09-15T16:15:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T16:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/uncategorized\/udp-leaders-downplay-impact-of-high-profile-resignations"},"modified":"2025-09-15T16:39:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T16:39:00","slug":"udp-leaders-downplay-impact-of-high-profile-resignations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/udp-leaders-downplay-impact-of-high-profile-resignations","title":{"rendered":"UDP Leaders Downplay Impact of High-Profile Resignations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>Senior officials of the United Democratic Party (UDP) have dismissed concerns that a string of high-profile resignations will weaken the party\u2019s standing ahead of upcoming elections, insisting that its base remains strong and committed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sulayman Saho, the National Assembly member for Badibou Central, and Lamin Manneh, the party\u2019s deputy secretary for external affairs, said in separate remarks that the departures of prominent members will not slow the party\u2019s momentum or alter its political trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Saho urged UDP supporters to remain united, describing the resignations as part of the ebb and flow of political life. He insisted that the party\u2019s leader, Ousainou Darboe, remain poised to contest and win the presidency in the next election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UDP has faced challenges before and survived,\u201d Mr. Saho said, recalling the party\u2019s split with President Adama Barrow in 2018, when many senior figures defected. \u201cAfter that, UDP went for elections, and we won 15 National Assembly seats, our councillors won, and we won mayoral positions too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Saho encouraged party members not to be unsettled by recent defections, noting that those who choose to leave are exercising their rights. \u201cMaybe their leaving is the best for the party,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat matters now is strengthening our structures and rallying behind Darboe, because supporting him is supporting the UDP and the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Manneh echoed that sentiment, arguing that no single individual\u2014including party heavyweights such as Talib Bensouda or Karafa Sonko\u2014holds sway over the UDP\u2019s broader electoral appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think Karafa, Talib, or anybody has that much of an impact on our electorates than the party and its programs,\u201d Mr. Manneh said.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that the UDP remains committed to democratic principles in its internal processes and will not allow a few individuals to dictate the party\u2019s direction. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have wanted these people to go, but they have gone, and that is democracy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the resignations, Mr. Manneh said the UDP\u2019s priority is to expand its reach and consolidate its support base. \u201cWhat we are doing is to bring as many people as we can,\u201d he added. \u201cWe will not bend to the will of the few.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Gambia<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia.
