Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie, who reportedly died in police custody on Friday, has sparked widespread outrage across The Gambia, with calls for justice and accountability growing louder from political leaders, civil society actors, and human rights advocates.<\/b><\/p>\n

Badjie, a native of Mandinary, is alleged to have been severely beaten by police officers prior to his death. The incident has reignited concerns about systemic police brutality in the country.<\/p>\n

Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, described the case as symptomatic of deeper problems within the Gambia Police Force (GPF).<\/p>\n

\u201cOmar Badjie\u2019s death at the hands of the GPF is a symptom of a bigger issue within the Gambia Police Force. Police brutality against vulnerable youths has existed in the Gambia Police Force since the 90s and points to a systemic issue. This case must be investigated thoroughly, and reforms should swiftly follow,\u201d Bensouda said.<\/p>\n

Brikama Area Council Chairman, Yankuba Darboe, also condemned the incident, pledging solidarity with the Mandinary community.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with the people of Mandinary, and we condemn the police brutality against our youths! We urge a swift investigation into the death of Mr. Omar Badjie and anyone responsible for his death to be brought to justice ASAP,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Civil society groups and activists echoed similar concerns. Omar Saibo Canara, Public Relations Officer of Gambians Against Looted Assets, warned against complacency in handling the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe life of Omar Badjie matters. Justice must prevail. I appeal to the conscience of every well-meaning Gambian. Omar\u2019s life must not be wasted, and this case must not be reduced to just another file gathering dust. We must demand answers. We must demand accountability. We must demand justice- not only for Omar, but for all those who have lost their lives, endured torture, or continue to live with the scars of state brutality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prominent human rights activist Madi Jobarteh also weighed in, calling for an end to impunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice for Omar Badjie! No to police brutality. No to Impunity! Gambia Decided For Peace, Liberty & Justice! #Accountability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In response to Omar\u2019s death, the Gambia Police Force extended condolences to Badjie\u2019s family and said it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.<\/p>\n
