President Adama Barrow Thursday broke his silence over the recent waves of violent incidents that have hit the country. He urged Gambians to\u00a0act\u00a0responsibly in a way that would preserve the peace that gov\u2019t and citizens are all yearning for.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cRecently, some people have been taking the law into their own hands to commit violent\u00a0acts\u00a0of destruction and attacks on property and individuals,\u201d the Gambian leader told lawmakers in his 2019 State of The Nation Address delivered<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the advent of the new democratic dispensation, Gambians have been taking to the streets to protest against corporate entities destroying their environment, police brutality, gender based violence etc. But in July this year, a sad of turn events resulted to the loss of lives and destruction of properties, raising serious\u00a0concerns\u00a0across the country.<\/p>\n

President reminded the\u00a0assembly\u00a0that the violent incidents were marked by arson and murder, spiraling out of control in Kombo Berending, Gunjur, Koina, Garawol and, most recently, in the Kanifing Municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonal attacks on government officials fighting crime in the country, such as the Assistant Police Commissioner and Head of the Police Anti-Crime, and arson attacks on his family home, the Bakoteh Police Station and within the Serekunda market area are not part of our values,\u201d he deplored.<\/p>\n

President Barrow further stated that \u201csaying \u201cNever Again\u201d comes with a big responsibility for both citizens and government.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then tagged the \u201ccitizens saying \u201cNever Again\u201d to State violence and other forms of abuse as being the ones \u201cwho engage in various forms of violence against their fellow citizens, State institutions and officials.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

President Barrow seized the opportunity to call on Gambians to preserve the peace prevailing in the country \u201cas peace is priceless, and stability is the\u00a0bedrock\u00a0of development and progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then\u00a0added: \u201cWe are One people, One Gambia for peace, progress and national development.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the tiny West\u00a0African\u00a0nation is navigating through the transition process, Barrow reiterated his call on all Gambians to rally behind gov\u2019t efforts to meet the healing, reconciliation and reconstruction process that is in progress.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us unite as a nation, and work together as a people; primarily, as\u00a0brothers and sisters\u00a0in a family. We must not\u00a0allow\u00a0politics or any worldly affair to separate us.We are all human beings and Gambians first, before anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
