Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) on Thursday, 9th October 2025, held an orientation ceremony for 200 new students at the institute\u2019s hall in Kanifing.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), representatives of satellite institutions, and current and newly enrolled students.<\/p>\n

Welcoming the new students, the Director General of GTHI, Momodou Sanyang,<\/p>\n

congratulated them on their admission, describing the occasion as the beginning of an exciting academic journey and a transformative chapter in the life of the institution.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that the new students are the first cohort to study under GTHI\u2019s newly developed curriculum, which he described as \u201can innovation born of vision, collaboration, and a deep commitment to excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation is more than the transmission of knowledge,\u201d DG Sanyang said. \u201cIt is the cultivation of character, the nurturing of talent, and the empowerment of individuals to become agents of change.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that the new curriculum is dynamic, industry-aligned, and infused with the values of sustainability, inclusion, and global relevance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis curriculum was not built in isolation,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is the result of rigorous research, consultations with industry leaders, and the tireless work of our academic teams. It integrates practical skills with critical thinking and prepares students not just for jobs, but for leadership, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

DG Sanyang encouraged the new intakes to embrace curiosity, challenge assumptions, and make full use of the opportunities before them. \u201cWhether you are training to become a chef, hotel manager, or hospitality innovator, know that you are part of a team that seeks to elevate tourism and hospitality as pillars of national development and cultural pride,\u201d he told the students.<\/p>\n

Representing the Director General of the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Lamin Sanyang commended the new students for choosing a field that plays a vital role in The Gambia\u2019s socio-economic development.<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism and hospitality are key pillars of our economy and a gateway to showcasing our culture and values to the world,\u201d he said. \u201cThis institution is not just a place to earn a certificate, but a place to grow, to learn discipline, professionalism, and service qualities that make The Gambia the Smiling Coast of Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further noted that the NCAC shares a common mission with GTHI to promote and preserve The Gambia\u2019s rich heritage while contributing to sustainable tourism growth through the link between culture and hospitality.<\/p>\n
