Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI), in partnership with the European Union (EU) and CNP-Espan\u0303a, on Monday, 13th October 2025, launched the GTHI-EU Compass Project at the institute\u2019s auditorium in Kanifing. The initiative, funded under the EU\u2019s MAC 2021\u20132027 framework, aims to enhance the skills and employability of Gambian youth in the hospitality and tourism sector.<\/b><\/p>\n

The project seeks to strengthen vocational training, promote sustainable tourism practices, and empower young Gambians to meet evolving industry demands. It will also support faculty exchanges, professional development, and student internships, fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange.<\/p>\n

In his keynote address, Honourable Abdoulie Jobe, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, described the project as a shared commitment to the future of education, professional development, and cooperation between The Gambia and the EU.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt its heart lies a vision to empower our youths, strengthen our institutions, and elevate the standards of vocational and academic training in the tourism and hospitality industry,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Minister Jobe commended the European Union and CNP-Espan\u0303a for their steadfast partnership and urged all parties to demonstrate full commitment to implementing the project\u2019s deliverables.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the country\u2019s National Development Plan (2023\u20132027), particularly its goals on youth empowerment and skills development.<\/p>\n

Her Excellency Dolore Rios Peset, the Spanish Ambassador to The Gambia, reaffirmed Spain\u2019s strong ties with GTHI, recalling its \u20ac3 million contribution in 2009 to establish the institute. She expressed pride in the institute\u2019s progress, noting that over 400 students graduate annually, many securing jobs in The Gambia and abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new project will further enhance students\u2019 skills and adaptability to market needs,\u201d she said, highlighting the inclusion of Spanish language lessons and specialised training in catering, customer service, and safety.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Rios also announced a pilot internship program that will send five outstanding students to the Canary Islands for hands-on experience in one of the world\u2019s top tourism destinations.<\/p>\n

She encouraged participants to serve as good ambassadors of The Gambia and return home to share their experiences.<\/p>\n

Inmaculada Roca i Corte\u0301s, EU Ambassador to The Gambia, and Basamba Drammeh, the Project Consultant, also delivered remarks, commending the collaboration as a model for sustainable human capital development.<\/p>\n

The launch ceremony featured musical performances by Spanish artist Inma Serrano and Gambian musicians Barhama Cham and Ndey Ida Cham, symbolizing the cultural bridge between The Gambia and Spain.<\/p>\n

The GTHI-EU Compass Project, which took off on 13th October 2025, is expected to significantly improve vocational education, enhance employability, and contribute to The Gambia\u2019s long-term tourism and economic growth.<\/p>\n
