{"id":88264,"date":"2025-10-18T07:38:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T07:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/uncategorized\/minister-unveils-161m-investment-plan-for-food-value-chains"},"modified":"2025-10-19T07:56:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T07:56:37","slug":"minister-unveils-161m-investment-plan-for-food-value-chains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/minister-unveils-161m-investment-plan-for-food-value-chains","title":{"rendered":"Minister Unveils $161M Investment Plan for Food Value Chains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>The Gambia has made a compelling case for global investment in its agricultural sector, as the minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, Demba Sabally, on Wednesday presented the country\u2019s National Agricultural Investment Plan during the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum in Rome, Italy, a flagship event of this year\u2019s World Food Forum and FAO\u2019s 80th anniversary celebrations.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvesting in agriculture is investing in food and nutrition security, job creation, poverty reduction, and lowering the food import bill,\u201d Sabally told the gathering of global investors.<\/p>\n<p>The minister, who is heading The Gambia\u2019s delegation in Rome, highlighted rice, onion, and poultry as priority commodities for private sector investment under the FAO-led Hand-in-Hand Initiative (HiHI), a mechanism designated to accelerate agricultural transformation through evidence-based targeting, partnerships, and investment matchmaking.<\/p>\n<p>Sabally said the initiative offers an opportunity for The Gambia to \u201ctransform its national agrifood system,\u201d emphasising that the government\u2019s vision supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He assured investors that The Gambia provides a conducive business environment backed by political will and investor-friendly regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA major enabler for a safe investment with high returns is the political will offered to private sector players by President Adama Barrow,\u201d he said, reaffirming government support in land acquisition and non-interference in private operations.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture, he noted, remains the backbone of the Gambian economy, accounting for 30 percent of GDP, employing nearly half of the working population, and sustaining over 80 percent of rural livelihoods.
