{"id":90027,"date":"2025-11-13T06:59:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T06:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/uncategorized\/barrow-and-sabally-address-drug-shortages-in-hospitals"},"modified":"2025-11-13T07:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T07:31:11","slug":"barrow-and-sabally-address-drug-shortages-in-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/gambia\/all-news\/barrow-and-sabally-address-drug-shortages-in-hospitals","title":{"rendered":"Barrow and Sabally Address Drug Shortages in Hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Gambia. <\/strong><\/span><b>President Adama Barrow and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, Demba Sabally, have defended the shortage of medicines in Gambian hospitals, arguing that no health facility in the world is fully stocked with every drug.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Farafenni during a joint meeting between Upper Baddibu and Sabach Sanjal as part of his ongoing \u201cMeet the People Tour,\u201d President Barrow said it is unrealistic to expect hospitals to provide all medications free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no hospital in the world where you can get everything for free,\u201d Barrow said. \u201cEven in America, one of the richest countries, hospitals are more expensive than anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that some Gambians living abroad return home for medical treatment because it is more affordable. \u201cIf you go to the U.S. and need a tooth extraction, it\u2019s cheaper to come to The Gambia, get it done, and return,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Barrow emphasized that criticism of the health sector often overlooks the government\u2019s progress, saying, \u201cWe have traveled before sitting in this country. Everything they are saying, we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister Sabally echoed the president\u2019s sentiments, dismissing claims that newly built hospitals are \u201cempty houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have all seen how many hospitals the president has opened across the country,\u201d Sabally said. \u201cBut when you listen to radio stations and social media, they say these hospitals are empty and without doctors.
