Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Standing among the smoke-filled stalls and crowded tables of one of the country\u2019s busiest fish markets, Saikou Sawo, the leader of the Golden Era Party, promised this week to extend new training and economic support to the women who drive the coastal town\u2019s fishing trade.<\/b><\/p>\n

Sawo, who toured the Tanji Fish Market and spoke with processors, vendors, and wholesalers, said he was struck by the resolve of the hundreds of women who fillet, smoke, and sell fish that supplies much of the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe spirit at Tanji Fish Market was powerful and inspiring,\u201d he said, praising the women for what he described as their central role in both household livelihoods and the national economy. \u201cThese women carry the weight of our homes, our economy, and our future. They deserve more than survival. They deserve opportunity, dignity, and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the party would work to help women gain access to skills training, equipment, and support systems to improve their earning power and expand their reach into international markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cGEP stands with every woman who wakes before the sun to feed this nation,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are committed to providing the skills, tools, and support that will elevate their talent from local shores to global markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pledge aligns with the party\u2019s broader message that \u201creal change lives where women rise\u201d. A refrain Sawo repeated during his visit. Party officials say the initiative is intended to strengthen not only individual businesses but also families and communities, with the aim of contributing to long-term economic growth.<\/p>\n

For many in Tanji, Sawo\u2019s remarks were welcomed as a rare acknowledgment of the women whose labor underpins the fishing sector. Whether the proposed support will materialize remains to be seen, but the visit offered a moment of optimism for workers who rarely receive attention from political leaders.<\/p>\n
