Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>Yankuba Darboe, chairman of the Brikama Area Council and an executive member in the opposition United Democratic Party, said he believes President Adama Barrow will lose the 2026 presidential election, arguing that the political establishment is \u201cmiscalculating\u201d the mood of the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

In an interview broadcast Friday on Eye Africa TV, Mr. Darboe described the political climate as \u201cvery interesting\u201d and predicted that the upcoming race would deliver \u201ca huge surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not think Barrow will win the 2026 election,\u201d he said. \u201cI can bet on that. He is not going to win. There is going to be a change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Darboe accused the Barrow administration of assuming it has already secured victory and behaving as if it needs not campaign. \u201cIf that is the notion of the ruling party, why are they still politicking?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

He also questioned the government\u2019s decision to issue national identity cards to Gambians living abroad, suggesting that officials were seeking to expand a pool of supporters who could return to cast ballots in the president\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n

Chairman Darboe said he is confident that political change is coming\u2014and that his party hopes to steer it in the United Democratic Party\u2019s direction. He urged Gambians to give the UDP a chance, arguing that its leader, Ousainu Darboe, has already demonstrated presidential experience.<\/p>\n

Mr. Darboe asserted that the UDP flag bearer effectively served as president during President Barrow\u2019s foreign trips, overseeing state affairs in his absence. Apart from Mr. Barrow himself, he said, \u201cAmong the rest of the contestants, Lawyer Darboe is the one who truly understands what the presidency entails.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BAC chairman also painted a bleak picture of the country\u2019s economic landscape, citing a depreciating Dalasi and escalating food prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe economy is literally tanked at the moment. Everything is on the rise. The country is really suffering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

To reverse the downturn, he argued, The Gambia needs a party with the competence to confront such crises\u2014a capability he said only the United Democratic Party possesses.<\/p>\n
