Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The National People\u2019s Party on Sunday sharply denounced comments made by Borry S. Touray, the United Democratic Party\u2019s administrative secretary for legal affairs, after a video circulated showing him telling supporters they were \u201cready to die\u201d to oppose President Adama Barrow\u2019s candidacy.<\/b><\/p>\n

The remarks, delivered during a house-to-house campaign stop in the coastal settlement of Jambur, drew a swift rebuke from the governing party, which characterized them as incendiary and destabilizing.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Nov. 30, the NPP accused Mr. Touray of making \u201cinflammatory, lawless, and grossly irresponsible\u201d declarations, including derogatory references to Mr. Barrow\u2019s supporters as \u201cnon-halal dingos\u201d and an appeal for followers to \u201ccome out and die.\u201d The party said such language amounted to an effort to threaten the president\u2019s constitutional right to vote and seek office.<\/p>\n

The NPP said the comments represented \u201ca direct assault on the country\u2019s peace, democratic order, and national cohesion,\u201d and urged the U.D.P. to publicly distance itself from Mr. Touray. The party also demanded that he issue an unqualified apology to Mr. Barrow, the NPP, and Gambians at large.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NPP reaffirms its commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the preservation of peace and national stability,\u201d said Seedy SK Njie, Deputy Spokesperson for the NPP. \u201cWe call on all Gambians to reject the politics of violence, intimidation, insults, and division, and to work towards maintaining the country\u2019s progress and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its statement, the NPP praised Mr. Barrow\u2019s leadership, crediting him with broadening the country\u2019s democratic space and steering national development efforts. The party warned that such gains should not be jeopardized by \u201creckless utterances\u201d or attempts to stoke unrest.<\/p>\n

The statement ended with a renewed pledge by the NPP to uphold democratic norms and promote unity as the country moves toward the next phase of its political transition.<\/p>\n
