Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>President Adama Barrow has cautioned parents who provide financial support to their children to undertake irregular migration journeys across the sea, describing such actions as a form of \u201csuicide.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing the trend of migration-related tragedies in The Gambia, Barrow said parents who fund the perilous journeys, locally known as the \u201cBackway,\u201d are neither helping their children nor the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cParents who give financial support to their children to take this perilous journey are committing suicide. You are not helping your children and not helping the country,\u201d he stated during a political rally in Mamuda Village, Kombo South.<\/p>\n

Barrow recalled his own experience in Europe, noting that he returned home because he believed he could build a better life in The Gambia. He warned against the misconception that living in Europe guarantees an improved standard of living.<\/p>\n

The President urged Gambian youth to work hard, emphasizing that diligence brings better opportunities. \u201cWhenever you are, if you work hard, you will get a better life,\u201d he said, highlighting the efforts of citizens in Mamuda and Mankamang Kunda who are using their skills to earn a living.<\/p>\n

Barrow added that irregular migration is not only costly and life-threatening but also tarnishes the country\u2019s image. He also noted that some Gambians in the diaspora are listed for deportation, but the government has refused their return, which has complicated the issuance of visas for the country.<\/p>\n
