Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The United Democratic Party (UDP) should lead any coalition ahead of the next elections, the party\u2019s youth leader has said, citing recent polls and public support.<\/b><\/p>\n

UDP Youth Leader Hagi Suwaneh<\/b> said the party\u2019s leader, Ousainu Darboe<\/b>, remains the most credible choice to champion policies focused on sustainability, anti-corruption and economic recovery.<\/p>\n

Suwaneh referenced CepRass polls<\/b>, which he said show declining confidence in President Adama Barrow<\/b>. The data, he said, indicates that 34%<\/b> of respondents preferred Barrow against an alliance candidate, while 49%<\/b> backed the coalition\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n

Among opposition parties, the UDP led with 35%<\/b>, while other parties recorded between 2% and 8%<\/b> support.<\/p>\n

\u201cGambians clearly want a UDP-led government capable of implementing meaningful reforms,\u201d Suwaneh said, adding that UDP\u2019s strong presence in the National Assembly<\/b>, local councils and community leadership positions reflects public backing.<\/p>\n

He also cited audit reports showing billions of dalasis unaccounted for in 2024, and more than 110 billion dalasis<\/b> lost between 2021 and 2023 due to alleged mismanagement and corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cTackling corruption and ensuring accountability must be central to any coalition-building process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Suwaneh said coalition principles should include clear policy priorities, transparent resource allocation, inclusive decision-making and shared goals.<\/p>\n

He praised Darboe\u2019s anti-corruption stance and disciplined leadership, noting that the UDP leader secured 238,000 votes<\/b> in the 2021 presidential election<\/b> and has continued mobilising support.<\/p>\n

\u201cExpecting UDP to abandon a leader with proven integrity and popular support would undermine the people\u2019s interests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that Darboe\u2019s leadership would ensure a coalition that reflects Gambians\u2019 priorities, including improving livelihoods, fighting corruption and building a sustainable future.<\/p>\n
