Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>In Truth 2026, an international workshop, was organised by the Hungarian Sports Journalists\u2019 Association (HSJA) at the Hungarian University of Sports Science on 8th April.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event brought together speakers and participants from 15 countries across three continents, with additional online participation bringing the total reach to nearly 20 countries. The discussions reflected a global profession actively trying to understand and shape the role of artificial intelligence in journalism.<\/p>\n

The workshop opened with remarks from Bala\u0301zs Fu\u0308rjes of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Zsolt Gyulay, President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC), and Gyo\u0308rgy Szo\u0308llo\u030bsi, President of the HSJA.<\/p>\n

Bala\u0301zs Fu\u0308rjes expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying: \u201cI would really like to thank Zsuzsa for coming up with this idea and for putting such a forward-looking and important topic on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gyo\u0308rgy Szo\u0308llo\u030bsi welcomed sports journalists from across the world. He openly addressed the profession\u2019s relationship with technology, saying: \u201cWe, sports journalists, are often afraid of AI \u2013 but the truth is, we all use it.\u201d He added: \u201cI always say, if AI can do the work better than a colleague, then perhaps we should let AI take over.\u201d At the same time, he noted its limitations: \u201cAI is still far from being insightful or humorous\u201d<\/p>\n

AI is already in use<\/b><\/p>\n

Edina Heal, former Director of Google Hungary, made this reality very concrete. \u201cEven I used artificial intelligence for my presentation,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is the reality.\u201d Her point was simple \u2013 AI is no longer something theoretical. Journalists are already using it and that cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n

The human side of sport<\/b><\/p>\n

Musa Sise from AIPS Africa brought the discussion back to the heart of sports journalism \u2013 emotion. \u201cAI is there, but it cannot show us the game,\u201d he said. \u201cIt cannot show emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responsibility and ethics<\/b><\/p>\n

Azra Isic stressed: \u201cInnovation alone is not a value. Accountability is. We must ask \u2013 who is responsible for what AI creates?\u201d<\/p>\n

Speed versus accuracy<\/b><\/p>\n

Natalia Donets highlighted: \u201cAI can give us speed, but it cannot replace accuracy. And without accuracy, we lose trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Closing reflection<\/b><\/p>\n

Ma\u0301rk Hete\u0301nyi of R34DY summed it up: \u201cAI is a new pen, but it is not the author.\u201d He also referred to AI-assisted newsroom tools that support research, alerts, and preparation tasks, including built-in verification functions that flag inaccuracies and outdated data. However, he stressed that final editorial responsibility must remain with journalists.<\/p>\n

A profession at a crossroads<\/b><\/p>\n

The discussions reflected both enthusiasm and caution. AI is transforming sports journalism, offering efficiency and new possibilities, but also raising questions about ethics, authorship, and responsibility.<\/p>\n

For AIPS, the message from Budapest was clear: it must help shape the future of journalism, not just respond to it.<\/p>\n
