Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Unite Movement for Change (UMC) has alleged that the seizure of the official village stamp from the Alkalo of Nyangen Village in the Central River Region was politically motivated and intended to serve the interests of the ruling National People\u2019s Party (NPP).<\/b><\/p>\n

At a press conference held on Thursday, the movement claimed that the Regional Governor acted beyond his mandate, arguing that such an action should have been directed by the Ministry of Local Government and Lands.<\/p>\n

UMC, a yet-to-be-registered political movement, further alleged that the Alkalo was targeted because his son is affiliated with the organisation and serves as a regional figure within it.<\/p>\n

The movement stated that the reasons provided for the seizure were not administrative or legal in nature, but political, and linked them to what it described as alignment with the ruling party\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n

It further expressed concern over what it described as disregard for due process and accountability in public office, warning that such actions could contribute to a culture of impunity.<\/p>\n

UMC also said it raised the matter during an engagement with the Minister of Local Government, maintaining that the Governor\u2019s actions did not follow established legal procedures.<\/p>\n

The movement added that similar incidents had been observed during previous electoral periods, where it claimed the boundaries between state authority and partisan activity were blurred, potentially undermining public confidence in democratic institutions.<\/p>\n

UMC called for the immediate restoration of the Alkalo\u2019s stamp, an independent and transparent investigation into the Governor\u2019s actions, and measures to ensure strict adherence to due process. It also urged broader governance and electoral reforms aimed at strengthening neutrality and accountability in public administration.<\/p>\n
