Africa-Press – Gambia. <\/strong> <\/span>South Africa disappointed African hopes in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to Mexico, one of the host nations, 0-2 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.<\/p>\n

The South African team returned to the world’s biggest football stage for the first time since 2010, where the “Bafana Bafana,” meaning “the boys” in Zulu, showed some moments of resilience during the opening match but paid the price for costly mistakes and a difficult second half that ended with nine players.<\/p>\n

This match carried a special nostalgic significance, coming 16 years after the famous 1-1 draw between South Africa and Mexico in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

The hosts started the match strongly in front of their enthusiastic fans, opening the scoring after 9 minutes through Julian Quinones. African representation remained limited for decades, with Morocco becoming the second representative in 1970, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which competed under the name Zaire in 1974.<\/p>\n

Tunisia made its debut in 1978, followed by Algeria and Cameroon representing Africa in 1982.<\/p>\n

Algeria and Morocco carried the continent’s hopes in 1986, while Cameroon and Egypt participated in 1990.<\/p>\n

The 1994 World Cup saw Africa represented by Cameroon, Morocco, and Nigeria, before the quota increased to 5 teams for the first time in 1998: Cameroon, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tunisia.<\/p>\n

The representation remained at 5 teams in 2002, with Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia, before Angola, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Tunisia qualified for the 2006 edition.<\/p>\n

The previous record for Africa was in 2010 when 6 teams participated in the World Cup hosted by South Africa.<\/p>\n

Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa were present in that edition, with Ghana reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Uruguay on penalties.<\/p>\n

In 2014, Africa was represented by Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tunisia qualified, while Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia carried the continent’s hopes in Qatar 2022.<\/p>\n

Morocco’s reaching the semifinals in Qatar changed the global perception of African teams in the World Cup. The “Atlas Lions” surpassed Belgium, Spain, and Portugal on their way to the final four, giving African football its strongest presence in the tournament’s history.<\/p>\n
