Africa-Press – Ghana. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), in partnership with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) held a sensitization and awareness campaign at the Women’s Football Festival on Sunday to educate football fans on best road safety practices.
The event, which drew hundreds of football fans to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, was used as a platform to engage and interact with individuals.
Mr. Felix Owusu, Planning Manager, NRSA said the engagement formed part of the broader strategy to engage key stakeholders in reducing road traffic accidents and fatalities.
“This is very important because it will help reduce the numerous crashes which most at times involve football teams or football lovers. Ours is to help reduce the incident of road traffic crisis so we do this through a number of interventions and one of them is education or sensitization,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of collective effort, especially from football clubs, to ensure the campaign’s success.
The planning manager further highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding road accidents in Ghana and the devastating impact on families and communities.
Statistics from the National Road Safety Authority shows that a total of 3,674 road traffic crashes were reported from January to March 2025.
Mr. Owusu charged other institutions, most especially, faith based organisations to champion the campaign as a way of helping to reduce crashes on roads.
The National Road Safety Authority and the Ghana Football Association in December last year signed a partnership which aimed at promoting road safety awareness and advocating for best practices among road users across the country.
As part of the initiative, the GFA and NRSA will roll out a series of activities, including driving refresher courses for football clubs, branding GFA vehicles with the NRSA logo, and targeted awareness campaigns for football fans and communities.
