Gaf’S Idun-Essel Tops Physical Training Course, Sets New Record

Africa-Press – Ghana. Lance Corporal Stephanie Idun-Essel of the 69 Airborne Special Force in Tamale has been named Overall Best Student at the Physical Training Advanced Course held at the Physical Training School (PTS), Teshie.

She is the first female to receive the honour since the school’s establishment, marking a historic milestone.

L/Cpl Idun-Essel’s achievement marks a significant milestone in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), underscoring the growing participation of women in military training and leadership.

Born on 2 November 2002, she attended Aburaman Senior High School in Abura Dunkwa and enlisted into the Armour Recruit Training School in Sunyani on 8 August 2022.

She graduated on 10 February 2023 as Second Runner-Up and Overall Best in Weapons.

In an interview with the Defence Press Corps, L/Cpl Idun-Essel said, “I am glad to be the first female recipient of this award, and I hope it motivates others to achieve more.”

The Officer Commanding, PTS, Captain J.A. Issahaku, praised her for the achievement and lauded the Ghana Armed Forces for fostering an inclusive environment that empowers female soldiers.
