Africa-Press – Ghana. A downpour on Wednesday morning left some communities in the Ada East District flooded and submerged some houses.

The affected areas are Ayigboe, Lolonyakorpe, Azizanya and Kewunor.

The rain, which started at about 01:00 hours, lasted for about seven hours, a situation which exposed residents to the effects of floods and destroyed properties.

Mr. Enoch Ayiku Perera, the Ada East District Deputy Director of Operations at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said several buildings have been constructed along waterways, obstructing the natural flow of rainwater.

He noted that a critical bridge connecting Ayigboe to the Ada Foah–Azizanya Road has also been blocked by a chalet constructed by an expatriate, causing the local sewage system to overflow and turning large sections of Ayigboe into stagnant pools of water.

While calling on residents to consult the district assembly before erecting new structures, he was unable to provide immediate solutions or a timeline for unblocking the affected bridge, leaving residents uncertain and frustrated.

Community members expressed deep concern over what they describe as the repeated failure of the district assembly to address the flooding issue, which recurs every rainy season, with many calling for urgent and lasting interventions to prevent further destruction and hardship.

Mr. Lawer Armah, Assembly Member for the area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that there were two bridges which connect the community and carry water into the river, adding, however, that all have been blocked by some chalet owners.

“The water which was supposed to drain out of the community is stagnant currently due to the blockage,” he noted.
