Africa-Press – Ghana. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, July 3, ended his two-day official working visit to Ghana on the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama.
He was seen off at the Kotoka International Airport by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
The Indian Leader departed Accra for Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on the second leg of his five nations tour.
During Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Ghana, he held bilateral talks with President Mahama at the Presidency in Accra, which was followed by a joint press conference and a State Banquet in honour of the Prime Minister.
President Mahama decorated Prime Minister Modi with Ghana’s prestigious national award, “the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana”, in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and outstanding global leadership.
The two nations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation between their two countries.
An MoU was signed between the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana, and the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
They also signed an MOU on cultural exchange between their two countries and also an MOU between the Bureau of India Standards and the Ghana Standards Authority.
Following consultations between Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, they also requested the signing of MoUs on vaccine manufacture and production, MoU on supply of agricultural machinery and implements, and an MoU on defence cooperation.
On Day two of his two-day official working visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Modi paid homage to Ghana’s founding President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah at his resting place, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.
Prime Minister Modi, who was accompanied by Vice President Prof Opoku-Agyemang, laid a wreath at the tomb of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Prime Minister Modi described Dr Kwame Nkrumah as a visionary statesman whose thoughts and ideals guide several people.
He said Dr Kwame Nkrumah devoted himself towards the well-being of the people of Ghana.
Prime Minister Modi in the company of Vice President Prof Opoku-Agyemang also address the Parliament of Ghana, where he reiterated the need for India to strengthen Parliamentary ties with Ghana.
The were received into the Chamber of the House, by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and the leadership of the House – Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, and Mr Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader.
Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Ghana is the first by an Indian Leader in three decades.
