Wenchi Municipal Assembly Inaugurates Committee for Urban Growth

Africa-Press – Ghana. Madam Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, has inaugurated a committee to oversee the implementation of the ‘Smart Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Cities programme’ to advance sustainable urban growth and progressive development.

The 20-member committee is tasked to use data driven planning to facilitate inclusive governance and thereby localize the implementation and the attainment of the SDGs.

According to Madam Gyamfi, the Smart SDGs Cities programme was a strategic component of the broader Ghana Smart SDGs Cities Programme being supported by the Norwegian government through the United Nations-Habitat.

The Ghana Smart SDGs Cities Programme is a national initiative aimed at localising the implementation of the UN SDGs through smart, data driven planning, inclusive governance, and sustainable infrastructure development.

It is aimed at building resilient cities by empowering local authorities to use digital tools, special data, and community engagement to improve service delivery, address urban challenges and enhance climate resilience.

Madam Gyamfi said the selection and involvement of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the implementation of the programme was a great opportunity and asked the committee to work hard for the municipality to derive the optimum benefit.

She said: “The Wenchi Municipality is now one of the 10 municipal and district assemblies participating in the national programme”, and asked the committee to work hard and justify the Assembly’s inclusion in the programme implementation.

Madam Gyamfi said the programme would spur economic growth through increased job opportunities, improve infrastructure and social development, promote health, education, and gender equality.

The programme implementation will further promote environmental sustainability, proper waste management, clean energy initiatives, eco-friendly practices as well as all-inclusive governance that ensures the voices of the local people are captured in decision-making.
