Africa-Press – Ghana. The Savannah Regional Peace Council, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a mentorship programme to empower aspiring female leaders in the region.
The initiative, supported by the Governments of Luxembourg, and Denmark, seeks to promote gender equity and strengthen local governance by enhancing women’s capacity in leadership, decision-making, and peacebuilding roles.
The initiative is in response to the underrepresentation of women in critical decision-making processes, especially in conflict mediation and community development, despite women’s significant portion of Ghana’s population.
Mr Kennedy Atiibo, Executive Secretary, Savannah Regional Peace Council, speaking during the launch at Damongo, said the initiative sought to link emerging young women with experienced female mentors including Queenmothers, former assembly members, and political leaders, who had demonstrated resilience and influence in their respective fields.
He said the Council had selected six experienced women to mentor young women over a three-month period, focusing on community service, governance participation, and conflict resolution.
Mr Atiibo appealed for additional support to expand the programme to all districts in the region.
He highlighted the crucial role of the media in sustaining the programme’s momentum by raising awareness and keeping the public informed about women’s inclusion in governance and development.
Participants, who attended the two-day training session as part of the initiative, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
Joanna Amabwache, a participant from the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, emphasized the power of mentorship in helping women navigate life’s challenges.
She said, “I have learned that having a mentor is essential. It gives you direction and strength. Marriage should not be a barrier. With the support of your partner, you can rise and contribute meaningfully to your society.”
