Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, has announced that Ministers of State will soon start using Electric Vehicles (EV).
This, he said, was part of the Government’s green transition initiative.
The Minister made the revelation in his half year report on Ghana’s energy sector when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series press conference at the Presidency in Accra.
The Government Accountability Series is being organised by the Presidency Communications Bureau as part of efforts to deepen transparency and accountability in governance.
Mr Jinapor said the government launched the EV promotion programme a couple of weeks ago and that these EV vehicles would depend on solar for charging.
He said the initiative was part of Government efforts and that EV vehicles would soon be imported for Government agencies.
“So very soon, you will see ministers driving EV vehicles, will roll it out to other departments and heads of agencies, some of who are here, will be driving EV vehicles powered by solar power,” he said.
“We will, in collaboration with the private sector, extend it to commercial drivers and other users so that EV vehicles will become a norm as far as the nation is concerned.”
He said Ghana’s energy sector was showing signs of stabilization and improvement, driven by ongoing reforms aimed at addressing both technical and financial challenges, as well as modernizing infrastructure.
He said the persistent and erratic power outages that had plagued the country when they assumed office during the beginning of the year had witnessed a remarkable improvement and reliable supply of power.
“And you can attest to the fact that we are now experiencing reliable, uninterruptible supply of power,” he said.
Mr Jinapor said on Sunday, when ENI was undertaking the upgrading of its facility to increase gas production, some people went to town saying there would be nationwide power outages.
“Fortunately, through the collaborative effort with all the stakeholders and our technical team, we’re able to conduct that operation successfully without switching even one megawatt off,” he said.
