Africa-Press – Ghana. Residents in Oti Region have expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to scrapped fuel allowances for government appointees, citing the need for prudent use of public funds for national development.
Some residents in Nkwanta North and Krachi Nchumuru districts have drawn comparisons between the modes of transmission used by world leaders and Ghanaian politicians.
Mr. Sampson Kwame Owusu, a businessman in Kpassa and Madam, Fatima Iddrisu, a teacher at Banda, cited Mr. Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, who is known for taking a ride on a bicycle to office, exemplifying humility and environmentally friendly.
Other residents in both Krachi East, Biakoye and Jasikan who were engaged by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), have criticized Ghanaian politicians for driving expensive vehicles, funded by taxpayer’s money while they struggle to make ends meet.
In an interview with GNA, other residents emphasized that government officials should prioritize serving the people over personal enrichment.
The residents drew comparisons with developed countries, where government officials are known to be frugal and prioritize public service over personal gain.
They welcomed the decision as a step in the right direction and urged President Mahama to consider further reforms, including scrapping ex-gratia payments and amending the constitution to benefit all citizens equally.
The residents stressed that politicians should prioritize serving the people who elected them, rather than enriching themselves at the expense of voters.
They expressed frustration that despite consistently voting for politicians, they are often left with poverty and poor policies, while politicians prioritize their own interests.
