Africa-Press – Ghana. The celebration of the weeklong fourth Goviewo festival of the chiefs and people from six communities in the Volta Region was climaxed on Saturday with a grand fundraising durbar at Adaklu Kodzobi in the Adaklu District.
The communities are Adaklu Kodzobi and Adaklu Goefe from the Adaklu District; Tsrukpe from North Dayi; Goviefe, Have and Woadze, all from Afadzato South.
The communities are said to be the descendants of one Togbe Goe who after their migration from Notsie in the Republic of Togo settled at various locations in Ghana.
The festival is celebrated annually on a rotational basis and funds raised are given to the hosting community for their development projects.
Togbe Dzegblade IV, Chief of Adaklu Kodzobi in the Adaklu District in his welcome address, said it was only the fear and respect for God that could end the menace of galamsey and other acts of environmental degradation in the country.
“Unless Ghanaians fear and respect the creator of the universe and turn on a new leaf, the fight against galamsey and other forms of environmental degradation would be a mirage,” he stated.
The Chief also advised the Goeviwo communities not to wait on government but initiate and execute their own development projects.
He noted that this could only be achieved through unity saying, “no community can develop in an atmosphere of chaos and disunity.”
Mr. Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive appealed to chiefs in the Volta region to unite for the accelerated development of the region.
He said: “I plead with our chiefs in the Volta region to emulate the shining example of the Goeviwo communities and unite as one people with a common destiny to enable us to propel the region’s development to an enviable level.”
Mr. Ameko who is also the Dean of Volta region DCEs assured the people that the President John Mahama led National Democratic Congress government would not let them down and called for prayers for the government.
He led a minute’s silence for last Wednesday’s helicopter crash victims.
Mr. Ameko on behalf of Mr. Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu donated GHC 10,000 to the people.
Some major highlights of the festival were hiking of the Adaklu Mountain, a health talk, cleanup exercises, football and a Bor Borbor night.
Present were Togbe Agbi III, Divisional Chief of Goefe, Togbe Apende, Dusifia (Rightwing Chief) of Woadze, Togbe Adanu Sakrafo X, Fiaga of Goviefe, Togbe Asemtsra, Fiaga of Have and Togbe Kwasi Sasraku I, Fiaga of Tsrukpe.
An amount of GHC67,000 was realized during an appeal for funds for the community’s development projects.
