Africa-Press – Ghana. Five institutions have jointly undertaken a clean-up campaign in Sunyani the Bono Regional capital to rid the capital of filth, as part of the activities to mark the 2025 International Youth Day (IYD).
Personnel of the institutions, comprising the Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), ActionAid Ghana (AAG), Citizens Watch Ghana (CWG), Young Urban Women, NGOs and the National Youth Authority (NYA) desilted choked gutters, pick paste waste and containers, and swept the principal streets of the capital.
According to Mr Simon Asore, the Executive Director of the CWG, the campaign was also to highlight the contributions of the youth towards the development of the nation.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the clean-up exercise, Mr Asore explained that the IYD was commemorated every year on 12 August, bringing youth issues to the attention of the government.
He said the Day also celebrated the potential of youth, as partners in today’s global society, saying the global theme for the 2025 celebration “Youth Empowerment for a Sustainable Future”, focused on empowering the youth to help build a better planet for all.
“This year’s theme focuses on taking action for a greener and fairer world”, he stated.
Mr Yaw Osei Boateng, a Programme Officer at the Bono Regional Office of the AAG also told the celebration would climax with a Bono Youth Summit on climate change and youth leadership.
He said the event would be at the main campus of the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani on Tuesday August 12 to highlight and sensitize youth groups on climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.
Mr Nabila Alhassan, the Bono Regional Accountant of the NYA, added that the Authority had set aside the entire month of August, partnering with relevant state and non-state actors, to observe the IYD and highlight the potential of the youth.
He said the NYA had been spearheading national youth development, and urged young people to visit the Authority’s offices and take advantage of their youth-oriented programmes to better their lives.
