Africa-Press – Ghana. The chiefs and people of Ofuman, a predominantly farming community in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region, have appealed to the government to construct a standard market to spur rapid socio-economic growth and development in the area.
They expressed concern about post-harvest losses of perishable crops, saying, with a modern market the farmers would be able to harvest and sell their crops on time.
Nana Asamoah Kesseh, the Kontrihene (sub-chief) of the Ofuman Traditional Area, made the appeal when Mr Francis Owusu Antwi, the Bono East Regional Minister extended his familiarization visit to the area.
He explained that the old market had limited space for traders, with poor market structures, adding that because of deplorable roads, the farmers could not transport their crops to the marketing centres for sale.
Nana Kesseh said the area also lacked physical infrastructure development and called for the construction of nurses’ quarters for health workers, urging the government to address the perennial acute water shortage too.
He said reshaping of the deplorable roads in the area would open up the area for economic growth and development.
The Regional Minister gave the assurance that their concerns and challenges would be tackled, pledging to construct more boreholes to alleviate their plight, saying, a six-unit classroom block would be also constructed for the local basic school in the area.
He said the kindergarten school would also benefit from a three-unit classroom block very soon, and assured to deploy more police officers to improve the security of the area.
He cautioned the people against acts of lawlessness, urging them to always allow the law to take course on suspected criminals.
The Regional Minister later inspected the progress of work on the construction of Agenda 111 District Hospital, which was about 75 percent complete in the town and assured of the government’s commitment to complete and hand-over the project for use.
On completion, he added that the facility would bring healthcare service to the door-step of the rural folks and thereby improve their health condition.
Mr Antwi also paid courtesies on the two traditional councils in the district, assuring his commitment to actively engage the chiefs and queens in the development process of the region.
