GNCCI Urges Government to Boost Property Tax Revenue

Africa-Press – Ghana. The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has called on the government to enhance effort to generate revenue from property tax leveraging on Property Address System and other digital tools.

This should include enhancing the capacity of the Assemblies to collect property tax.

Mr Stephane Miezan, the President of GNCCI, said the government should also double its efforts to widen the tax base to reduce the burden on the few compliant taxpayers while employing prudent means of addressing tax non-compliance.

Mr Miezan made the call at the 49th Annual General Meeting of the Chamber on the theme: “Strengthening Local Businesses for Sustainable Growth and Development.”

He urged the government to consider bringing back the road toll and formalizing the informal sector through

incentives, e-VAT filing, tax amnesties, and Ghana Card–linked business tax platforms.

The Chamber expects the government to use the impending 2026 budget to initiate policies that will further stimulate private sector growth.

He said the GNCCI was ready to support the government in finding solutions to the critical issues affecting the private sector and together achieve sustainable growth and development in Ghana.

Mr Miezan reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to working closely with the government and key stakeholders to enhance the business environment and promote sustainable economic growth.

“We encourage collective efforts toward adopting sustainable business practices that will strengthen local enterprises and ensure long-term national development,” he added.

The Chamber wants the government to review downwards the already existing taxes including simplifying and Consolidating VAT and all levies into a single transparent VAT rate.

“As well as reduce VAT and remove the COVID-19 levy which has outlived its relevance,” he said.

He urged the government to introduce turnover- and employment-based corporate tax thresholds, remove VAT on insurance premiums to enhance accessibility for households and MSMEs.
