Africa-Press – Ghana. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has commended Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Foreign Affairs Minister, for securing US visa sanction reversal for Ghana.

The U.S. government officially lifted its visa sanctions on Ghana in September 2025, reversing restrictions that had been imposed earlier in July of the same year.

The reversal of the sanctions followed months of high-level diplomatic engagement between Ghana and the U.S government.

Mr Ayariga was responding to a question posed by Habib Iddrisu, the First Deputy Minority Chief Whip requesting for the Minister of Foreign Affairs to brief the House next week on the US visa sanction reversal, after the presentation of the business statement on the floor of the House.

The U.S. had limited Ghanaian visa applicants to three-month single-entry visas.

These restrictions were reportedly due to concerns over visa overstays by Ghanaian nationals.

Following the reversal of the visa sanctions, Ghanaian applicants are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas, with additional enhanced consular privileges being restored.

The announcement was made during a bilateral meeting at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Ms Allison Hook, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, formally conveyed the decision to Mr Ablakwa.

The reversal marks a significant improvement in diplomatic relations and travel opportunities for Ghanaians.
