Ghana Calls for Immediate Cessation of Hostilities in Sudan

Africa-Press – Ghana. The Government of Ghana has expressed concern over the escalating armed conflict in the Republic of Sudan.

It is, therefore, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

It comes amid growing international appeals for an end to the fighting and renewed commitment to dialogue and democratic transition in the war-torn country.

The Ghanaian Government, in statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, said the protracted violence had caused immense humanitarian suffering, leading to significant loss of lives and mass displacement of civilians.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti.

The conflict has plunged the country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, displacing millions and leaving large parts of the population without access to food, healthcare, or basic services.

The Statement said: “The Government of the Republic of Ghana has observed, with grave concern, the atrocious effects of the ongoing armed conflict in the Republic of Sudan…which has resulted in humanitarian catastrophe including significant loss of lives, and massive displacement of civilians.”

It noted that the continued conflict had left millions destitute and facing starvation, undermining regional security and threatening the progress made toward a peaceful transition in Sudan.

Ghana reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Sudan and reiterated its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and democratic governance across the African continent.

The statement stressed that there was no military solution to the crisis and urged all parties to immediately halt the violence and pursue dialogue.

It called for an immediate, complete, and unconditional end to all military operations nationwide, alongside the urgent establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to enable the rapid and unrestricted delivery of life-saving assistance to affected regions.

The Government further urged strict adherence to International Humanitarian Law to ensure the safety and protection of all civilians, aid workers, and medical personnel.

It appealed to the warring parties to return to the negotiating table and work toward a civilian-led transitional government.

The Government also called on regional and international actors to desist from providing any form of support that fuels the conflict and to fully comply with the United Nations arms embargo on Darfur.

It reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting regional and international efforts aimed at ending the war and restoring peace and stability in Sudan.

It urged the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and other international partners to intensify diplomatic initiatives and mediation to help achieve a peaceful resolution.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at resolving the conflict and promoting long-term stability in Sudan,” the statement further stated.
